Indeed, as Ross admitted, they had been rescued from ‘the very borders of grave. Once all had been sorted out, the three boats sailed to the whaler, whose crew manned the rigging and waved and cheered as the boats approached and the rescued men climbed on board (see Plate 16). . .

A dosen years earlier, there would have been no whalers in those waters.
