Since the ‘Victory had sailed north in Baffin Bay in July 1823, nothing has been heard of John Ross and his crew, and by 1832 fears were growing for their safety. Among those planning to rescue effort was Commander George Beck en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Back one of the navy’s most experienced Arctic land travellers, who had accompanied Franklin on both is overland journeys. He was appointed by an unofficial search committee in London to lead an expedition to search for Ross, and obtained a modest grant from the government, as well as the help of the Hudson’s Bay Company and the support of the newly formed Geographical Society.. . . . .

Indeed, as Ross admitted, they had been rescued from ‘the very borders of grave. Once all had been sorted out, the three boats sailed to the whaler, whose crew manned the rigging and waved and cheered as the boats approached and the rescued men climbed on board (see Plate 16). . .

Once on board, and after the first greetings, everything ‘was to be done at once; it was washing, dressing, shaving, eating all intermingled . . .in the midst of all there was interminable question to be asked and answered on all sides; the adventures of the Victory, our own escapes, the politics of England, and the news which was now four years old’ The escue was repayment of a sort, for Roass’s first Arctic voyages of 1818, and Parry’s which followed, had been responsible for opening up new routes to the whaling grounds off the west coast of Baffin Bay and into Lancaster Sound. A dosen years earlier, there would have been no whalers in those waters.
