Excellent close up. It may be this Hawthorn Shield Bug.
The Birch Shield Bug (Elasmustethus interstinctus) looks like this.
Stormlizard club has replied to Tractacus clubThe Hawthorn Shield bug is much larger than the Birch Shield bug,birch shield bugs are mostly Red while small but the pattern on the back is clear.
Your owm photo to me suggests it is the Hawthorn bug, it has bits like shoulder padding that the Birch bug does nt have.
