Great Central Railway Loughborough Leicestershire October 1999

Back in 1999 LNER N2 0-6-2T 4744 ran in British Railways livery as 69523 on Loughborough shed. Today she runs at the GCR as Great Northern Railway 1744.

Very true especially with the O4 alongside which at the time was nearing the end of its first overhaul since BR days.

For some reason, probably personal nostalgia, I prefer seeing this livery. I don't know whether I ever saw an N2 in the flesh, but the BR livery with the later crest is the one I remember from my yoof.

Same here Phil. I think the N2 looks great in GNR green but my preference is always BR black.

A lovely, grimy picture, pretty rare among the Heritage lines and nice to see. The glamorous pacifics are all very well but I wish more of the everyday workhorses, such as the N2, had been preserved. I would love to see a machine like this on a "Buffer Puffer" style railtour, especially if left "unpolished" for a while beforehand.
