Indonesia Medan Kampong Keling 1980

Indonesia Medan Kampong Keling 1980
Indonesia Sumatra, Kampong Keling market, Medan. Note the fine vegetables amongst the tropical fruit. These were grown in Brastagi a few hours drive and a few thousand feet higher to the southwest where the climate was more temperate.

We lived in Medan from 1979 to 1981 when I worked for Mobil & greatly enjoyable it was. I found the people and places fascinating. Every day threw up something new & even on the walk to the office you saw different things of interest.

I went back on holiday in 1997 &, unsurprisingly, things had changed. Toko Ben's - the sacks sit outside the shop entrance - had transformed into a modern supermarket no longer opening onto the market but what shocked me the most was the fact that the Mobil office building had been converted into a Pizza Hut! A sign of the times I suppose.

Berny, Marco F. Delminho, Diana Australis, have particularly liked this photo

Lovely to see this. I know Kampung Keling well.
I spent lots and lots of time in Sumatra from 1988 to 2000. I speak Indonesian. I spent much time in Brastagi where I worked to get a tourist café up and running with local friends, an also had families I used to stay with on Lake Toba, in Aceh, and in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra. I love the people very, very much.
Have a fabulous Xmas....all the best to you and yours xx

Thanks Diana. That's a coincidence. We lived in Medan but used to spend weekends in Brastagi and at Parapat on Lake Toba. I went up to Aceh for work and I had a friend living on a plantation near Bukittinggi. On a very topical subject - writing this on Christmas Eve - my most memorable image is of the christian Batak villages in the evening darkness with white candles in every hut window.
Have a great Xmas and a Healthy New Year.

Hope you have a fantastic New Year in spite of the lockdowns and restrictions. Most of all, stay safe!
So interesting that you know where I spent so much happy time! I have spent quite a few Christmases in Brastagi with Batak friends, and even one where Eid ul Fitri was 2 days after, so I was dragged to every Christian house for a nosh up, then to all my Muslim friends fir the same 2 days later! They were good times! I have also spent weeks at a time in my “family” home (Muslim) in Bukittinggi, where I knew half the town, too.
Such coincidences! I was in Bukittinggi 3 years ago fora “family” wedding and it was still pretty much the same as 20 years ago!
Best wishes..,D

One of our best friends today is an Indonesian girl from Medan who worked in the same office as me in 1981. We lost touch after I was transferred away but by an amazing coincidence met up with again in Yemen 12 years later. She had since married a Frenchman, moved to Paris and then transferred to Sana'a. She was waiting to pick up her daughter from the French school and by chance met my wife who was waiting for our daughter who attended the same school. Over the years since we have enjoyed their friendship in many places worldwide and had planned to meet up in Jakarta in January but this pandemic has blown that away I'm afraid.
Best wishes to you and yours,
Pete
