what's dead inside can't be reborn....

what's dead inside can't be reborn....
This old Iowa one room schoolhouse hasn't seen a student in over 60 years. As the cold and snow sets in,the foreboding atmosphere adds to its desolation....

Those old one-room schoolhouses are part of American history that is quickly being forgotten. Often, there was only one teacher, but since these schools were often found in remote areas it meant that the kids didn't have to walk or take a horse or travel many miles in order to learn. The kids weren't bused or driven to school. The school came to them (their neighborhood) and wasn't located many miles away. I can think of several advantages to those old one-room schoolhouses: for one thing, each time you overheard the teacher instructing the students below you, it reinforced and helped you remember what you had learned in years before. As the teacher taught the kids ahead of your grade, you heard in advance the material to which you'd eventually be introduced. The teachers who were there typically taught because they really cared about the kids. There was no grand salary, and the benefits were few, if any. The teacher was there because he/she really cared about the kids. At this point I should point out that I have two sisters who teach and that I'm not at all saying that teachers shouldn't receive excellent pay, but the fact that someone wanted to teach in the days of the one-room schoolhouse showed real dedication to the kids. Their career choice was made out of love. Education then was really about educating kids, and not about indoctrinating them or making them militant with the latest social causes. Again, I do not mean to imply that all schools today indoctrinate, rather than educate, but sadly, many do. The teacher was free to lovingly correct kids, as needed, even if that meant a hickory switch. Often, teachers today have their hands tied and can't do anything to stop unruly or undesirable behavior in the classroom. Life was simple, but those old one room schoolhouses turned out a society that worked and didn't fall apart. Not everything that changes is progress, not everything old is bad, and not everything new is necessarily good. A wonderful capture of a time gone by.

Thanks for the info Greg! I actually went to the last one room schoolhouse in my county in Northern Illinois for 6 months before we moved. It closed 2 years later in 1967. It was a brick structure that survived as a private residence.

I'm glad you got to have the experience of the one-room schoolhouse, and I'm glad that the structure survived to have a second life! :)

Agreed Gary, but it is decaying pretty badly. Unless it is stabilized soon,it will collapse in a few years sadly.
