Phoenix Brewery Co Ltd
The original Phoenix Brewery Company at Heywood was registered in 1874 and had something of a chequered history, going bankrupt three times. The last occasion was in 1939, when about 120 pubs were owned, prompting its purchase and closure by the Cornbrook Brewery of Old Trafford. This plaque dates from one of the more prosperous periods when the brewery saw substantial rebuilding.

It was a small pub with the entrance door between the two front windows. Both windows had a frosted texture on which each had a phoenix logo thus showing its origin. The window of the 'tap room' survived until, on a rowdy night, someone threw a pint pot barrel type glass at it and it was replaced with an very ordinary window pane.
The Bridge Inn was re-named the Merry Monk circa late 1970s but later closed. The building still survives but because the road name was also changed in the 1970s the address is 234 College Road rather than 234 Bury Road.
