Uphill to the Burma Mines

Uphill to the Burma Mines
A train of ore hoppers heading up to Tiger Camp on the Burma Mines Railway. The locomotive is a rare surviving product of Stoke-on-Trent builders Kerr Stuart, having been completed in 1914. The men on the buffer beam are the sanding apparatus.

A Buildings Fan, Blue rubber octopus, SV1XV have particularly liked this photo

Do they only sand from the buffer beam or do they have to jump off to pour it onto the rail in front of the wheels?
