Regenboog - Rainbow

Regenboog - Rainbow

Saturday Self Challenge: grote scherptediepte

For this challenge I had the plan to photograph around sunrise. I did that and while is was cycling back I saw the sky became overcast: there was a shower underway and it was going rather fast. On the Nesciobrug I saw this rainbow. It was even a complete and also a partial second appeared. The rainbow also reflected in the water of the canal. The suns shone a little while under the clouds before it started to rain for a short while.
I had my camera (Canon G12) still on maximal depth of field (f8) possible for this camera. This results in diffraction: the photo gets less sharp and a little grainy. This is a normal phenomenon which can be explained through the aperture of the blades of the lens. With bigger lenses it appears with higher f-numbers. In Lightroom I could remove the diffraction but that resulted in extra unsharpness. Needless to say I usually shoot with this camera in the range f4 to f5,6.
On the photo the Zeeburgerbrug in the motorway A10 over the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal.

Wow, lucky you to be able to capture this! Thank you for explaining about the phenomenon of refraction. I often wondered why I was getting photos less sharp in deeper DOF. I need to increase f-stop, correct?

I just saw it is named diffraction and not refraction. basicly, the higher the f-number (and therefore the smaller aperture), and after a certain value you get more and more diffraction. My G12 has some diffraction at f8 (highest possible f-number), for full frame lenses that number may be f16 or higher.

The light and rainbows are wonderful! Diffraction is always a problem, especially as each camera/ lens has its own "sweet spot".

An impressive photo, Diederik. Fantastic light and colours. The musical match for 'Sight and Sound' fits like a glove.
