Just beyond the trailhead...

9-05-21 (Stewart-Columbine Loop)

In the Arc Dome Wilderness at the south end of the Toiyabe Range in central Nevada. The Toiyabes extend north-south for some 100 miles (160 km) right in the middle of the state, with much of the crest around 10K feet (3050 m) or more. Arc Dome itself is the highest peak (11773 ft/3588 m) in the range. The Stewart Creek trail starts from the Columbine Campground, a small primitive USFS campgroun…  (read more)

Up the ridge

Looking back northwest

The valley where we first topped out looks a long way down now! Northern part of the Reese River Valley and the Shoshone Range in the distance.

Still climbing the ridge...

Looking back westerly to the Reese River Valley and the Shoshone Range. Here it's apparent that the path is an old Jeep track.

Still climbing the ridge...

A vehicle hasn't been this way in over thirty years, but the tracks persist...

Still following the ridge

In 1973 we thought that pointy peak just starting to appear on the left might be Arc Dome, our then-destination. Boy, were we wrong! We knew better this time.

Junction with the TCT

Here the Stewart Creek trail makes a junction with the Toiyabe Crest Trail. We keep to the left, still climbing the ridge.

Still a ways...

The ridgecrest still looks to be a ways above us--and we do know the pointy peak is NOT Arc Dome!

Big Sawmill Canyon

Looking slightly west of south. The TCT comes up this canyon.

Looking back west

...with the Reese River Valley and Shoshone Range more prominent.

Still climbing the ridge...

With the slant we're traversing, this would have been a hairy section when the trail was open to 4wd vehicles. If you started rolling you wouldn't stop for a long ways.

Getting closer...

05 Sep 2021 44
The 11K elevation ridge we're headed for almost looks achievable now.

Rough...

05 Sep 2021 47
This would have been dicey in a vehicle, even with 4wd!

Almost there...

Last push

05 Sep 2021 49
The skylined cairn marks the ridge top--at about 11K feet!

Looking back southwesterly

The old Jeep trail we just came up.

THAT'S Arc Dome!

Finally peeking over the ridge in the foreground.

Arc Dome (11,773 ft/3588 m)

In context. Going to the summit requires a six-mile round trip off the TCT, plus crossing that prominent saddle! We gave it a miss this time...
