A normally dry basin in eastern Oregon, actually crossed by Oregon SR 31. The basin was a lake in 2017 because of the extraordinary water year. Looking south.

Had it ever been a lake before or was it a complete surprise?

It had never had water in it when I'd been this way before! It was a dry lake bed--i.e., a playa, in the usage of the SW US and (presumably) Mexico.

Nice composition and very interesting there was so much rain there in 2017. We have yet to explore the eastern part of Oregon but sure look forward to it!

You wondered about Detroit Lake. They DID get clobbered. But we left just as the fire there was starting to become serious. A week later and we just about fell over from the news of such devastation. We would spend the rest of our trip, until October, running from the smoke. Horrible.

Ah! I should have paid more attention to the date of your photo! Glad you got out well beforehand--but it sure sounds, from the media reports, that there wasn't much left of Detroit afterward. A good friend of mine lives in Stayton, outside Salem, and they were at risk as the flames roared down the Santiam canyon. They never quite had to evacuate, however.

And thanks! The Cascades and points west tend to get all the press, but eastern Oregon has its charms! It's a bit closer for us, too--Lakeview is about 4 hours from Reno.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, the town of Detroit was destroyed... take a look at these search results--both the video snapshots and also scroll down to see the images below. It's such a shame and so awful because we drove through it before there was a fire. :(

As for E Oregon, we want to get out there but it's not as accessible and a distance from the west. I'd hoped that we could stay there some this year but it's not happening. Maybe next year but not sure...

BTW I visited your other Trees of Mystery pictures...have to say...I am jealous. I love this crap, it's just so idiotic and silly! Here's a picture I took of a truly marvelous mural you may have seen. ROFLMAO: www.supermoto.photo/gallery-leggett/#jp-carousel-508
