Mt. Rose (10,785 ft/3287 m)
High point of the Carson Range, the spur of the Sierra Nevada that juts into Nevada and forms the east side of Lake Tahoe. It's a prominent sight southwest of Reno, Nevada. There is a local urban legend that it's an extinct volcano, which has even made its way into Wikipedia (and which I always had to mention when I taught geology at UNR), but in fact the Carson Range is another big fault block, of which this summit is just the high point. (Misinformation in Wikipedia? Perish the thought!)
Seen looking northwest from Kit Carson Bowl in the Mt. Rose Ski area, which is _not_ on Mt. Rose itself!
In response to Andy's question--the origin of the name "Rose" is uncertain, but there are several tales!
