Glacial striations

Glacial striations
Scratches from rocks lodged in the ice, scraping over the substrate. Off the trail above Fallen Leaf Lake, Sierra Nevada, California, USA. Boot for scale.

I was fascinated to see a rock marked this way in Montreal. Great shot.

Thanks! These features are very common where there's been recent glaciation, so I'm not surprised to hear they're in Montreal. Not much glaciation down your way since the end of the Paleozoic! I've heard, tho, that there are striations preserved on other pieces of Gondwanaland, in India and South Africa in particular, where they're now coming directly out of the sea. This was the sort of evidence that made southern hemisphere geologists much more receptive to the idea of continental drift, decades before plate tectonics.
