"Restored" Officers' quarters

"Restored" Officers' quarters
Ft. Churchill, Nevada, USA. A "restored" barracks is shown in the left inset. Ft. Churchill was built in the early 1860s to (a) intimidate Confederate sympathizers; and (b) intimidate the local Paiutes. It succeeded on both counts. The fort was abandoned by 1870 and sold for scrap. The timbers were salvaged, but the rest of the buildings, made of adobe, fell into ruin. Why "restored" in quotes? These well-defined "ruins" are actually well-meant 1930s restorations--the original buildings are now just heaps of mud. (See the right inset, and there are some other pix elsewhere in this collection.) The area is now a Nevada state park.

, William Sutherland, Don Barrett (aka DBs travels) have particularly liked this photo

1930's "restoration"? As I suspected, one of the things the CCC (New Deal) was doing:

Well, they meant well, I guess. They also "restored" some Native American sites, which comes pretty close to vandalism by modern standards. I've got some pix I'll post One of These Days along that line, too.

And thanks for tracking down that link!

If my memory is correct, I've read about actual efforts by the NPS to correct for that earlier 'help' at a couple of sites near Flagstaff.
