Why you don't buy land sight unseen, especially in the desert West. And if you do decide you want a chunk of desert, make sure it comes with water rights, too. It's _really_ useless if you can't drill a well!

This land is private (and thus able to be sold) because of the railroad land grants dating from construction of the original transcontinental railroad in the 1860s. The railroad was given alternating sections (square-mile parcels) extending out 6 miles (IIRC) from either side of the right-of-way.

There's wifi at the motel (in Lovelock), but nothing out here! I put .pdfs of the topo maps that we'll need on my Kindle, and I once had it happen that the .pdf reader wouldn't work because it was trying to find a connection to check for updates! Grrr-- There are _still_ places beyond wireless. Thank God--

I installed a different pdf reader ;)
