Cyanide vat and loading chute

Cyanide vat and loading chute
Antelope mine. A silver-lead producer. The tails were probably later cyanided for Au. Antelope District, Pershing County, Nevada.

They tend to be big, but the solution is very dilute--cyanide ion has an extraordinary affinity for gold. (It's still high enough concentration to be plenty toxic to animals.) Air (oxygen) also has to be present for the reaction to work--hence they're "vats", with a high ratio of surface area to volume. Putting the solution in a closed tank wouldn't work!
