Maybe he didn't want to be in the photo, but had to be for safety's sake.

He does appear troubled about something but he seems to have taken a gentle grasp on the child's hand, helping her hold the reins. One thing for sure, the owner of that garden behind them wants no one treading upon the garden path. Also, interesting to see the wash put out to dry in the background. Do you have a guess as to the date of this photo? I'm thinking early 1920s based on the child's hair and clothing.

Great caption! And Rick's observation about the fence made me realize that it has sharp spikes at the top. Ouch!

Stephan, this type of "child on a horse" photograph (taken by traveling photographers, usually) was most popular from the early 1900s to the early/mid. 1920s. Given the man's clothes and the child's haircut and clothes, I would say this is most likely the early 1920s. (agree with you, Rick.)
This was a "found" photograph and I think I got in in Vermont, but it looks to be from another state -- those do not look like Vermont town buildings.
Thank you friends, and a very happy weekend to all!

What a great find Deborah. He doesn't seem too happy but maybe he just doesn't like being photographed.

HFF and have a good weekend
