Blacking the Boots

Which, after googling, appears to be re-coloring them before applying polish.

I love the young woman's smile in this photo, and the shadow of the photographer's head with hat. Also, the corset/stays hanging on the washing line behind her.

Yes, the woman's smile, the shadow, and wash line definitely make for a great photo! It's nice that the photo's dated, too. I'll have to take a closer look at your Michigan Album photos--this one and some others I quickly glanced at are quite nice.
