Rose Hersee by Gurney
Rose Hersee (1845-1924); English soprano.
At the age of 6 she already performed as a child prodigy and at the age of 11 she gave her first concert. After singing studies with Manuel Garcia Jr., Hermine Rudersdorff and Luigi Arditi she started her stage career in 1868 at the Drury Lane Theatre with the Mapleson Opera Company. In 1869 she performed with the New Italian Opera at the Lyceum Theatre in London. In 1870 she toured the USA with the Parepa-Rosa Company and in 1871 she was the “Prima Donna” of the St. James Theatre in London. After having founded her own opera company she made guest appearances in a great number of English cities. The last years of her career she was engaged by the Carl Rosa Opera Company. In 1879/80 she made a tour to South-Africa, Australia and New Zealand. After retiring from the stage, she became a successful voice teacher.
