Antoinette Sterling by Stereoscopic
Antoinette Sterling (1850-1904); American contralto.
After having started her vocal studies in New York with Abella she continued them in Europe with Mathilde Marchesi, Pauline Viardot-Garcia and Manuel Garcia Jr. After she returned to the USA in 1871 she began a very successful American career as a concert singer. In 1873 she went to England and sang in concerts with conductor/composer Julius Benedict and in 1875 she appeared at the Gloucester Festival. In 1875 she married John MacKinlay and they settled in London. Here she acquired much respect as an “Oratorio and Lieder” singer (Mendelssohn, Schumann etc). Her farewell tour was in 1902/03 and her last appearance was at East Ham on 15 October 1903.
