In answer to your question in the note box: Roy thinks canals generally look better in landscape format, as it gives more sense of continuity, with the water flowing through the picture. It wouldn't be a "tight rectangle", because the fact of the topmost branches not being shown would allow one to imagine the rest and gives more prominence to the reflection and the boat.
