Luck, as ever. We'd just had lunch at the Three Horseshoes (centre right) and, moving on, I'd sized up the (then empty) lock and decided that it wasn't interesting enough to take, when the two painted barges suddenly appeared, and I got the camera out of my rucksack PDQ and ran back. Fortunately they were moving slowly, and the sun, which was going in and out, was out at the critical moment.
