Københavns Hovedbanegård Station, Copenhaven, Denmark, 2007

Copenhagen

I visited Copenhagen for the first time in July of 2007, and that was where this album started. I had a lot of problems on the trip, like one hotel refusing to honor my reservation and another overcharging me, with the nicest people being the hippies of Christiania, but overall it was a memorable trip. :-)

Københavns Hovedbanegård Station, Copenhaven, Denmark, 2007

Also known as Copenhagen H, or Kobenhavn H, for short, this is the main rail station for Copenhagen, and is the largest in Denmark. It was built in 1911 to replace an earlier station from 1864, which had replaced the original station from 1847.

Tivoli Gardens Main Gate, Copenhagen, Denmark, 2007

Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen is the second oldest amusement park in the world as Dyrehavsbakken, also in Denmark ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyrehavsbakken ), is the oldest. These two parks are in fact much older than most of the runners up, having been built in 1583 and 1843, respectively.

Tivoli Gardens Stage, Copenhagen, Denmark, 2007

Tivoli Gardens, like many amusement parks, features exaggerated versions of architectural styles from around the world. This is one of the stages for entertainers, based on a Chinese (I think) pagoda.

Star Flyer And Other Attractions, Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen, Denmark, 2007

In spite of its vintage looks, one of the newest rides at Tivoli Gardens is the Star Flyer, that tower you see in the back, which was completed in 2006. It's considered a carousel, however bizarre that may seem, and being 80 meters tall, that makes it the tallest carousel in the world, or at least the tallest chair carousel. That large building with the fake plastic front is the Glass Hall, dating to 1863, although the current building mostly dates to 1946, when it had to be rebuilt from destruction during the war. It was under construction again as of the time I was there, undergoing a restoration.

Radhaus Plausen (City Hall Square), Copenhagen, Denmark, 2007

This is the square, bustling with bike and pedestrian (as well as car) traffic that the city hall and Palace Hotel sit on. The Palace Hotel is the building on the right, owned by Le Meridien, it is expected to reach five-star standards by the time its current renovation is complete. Built in 1910, it's Art Nouveau architecture, by now historic in nature, is another of its selling points.

City Hall and Palace Hotel, Copenhagen, Denmark, 2007

Built in 1892-1905, the Copenhagen City Hall was inspired partly by the city hall of Siena, Italy, where I've also visited (hopefully I'll have some photos of it eventually as well).

Bikes, Copenhagen, Denmark, 2007

Bicycles are a major mode of transport in Copenhagen, and the city was recently voted the world's third most bike friendly city by Virgin Vacations. You can read a blog about it here in WIRED: blog.wired.com/cars/2007/11/where-are-the-m.html
