Hiking
I had obviously hiked before....in the Adirondacks, but my first trip to Austria in 2005 completely changed my view of what hiking really meant. We nearly summitted Dachstein, but had to turn back because of poor visibility and s

This is sort of the odd out of my Sumava hiking photos, and I'll be the first to admit that I don't remember where I took it.

Here's another oddball from the Sumava series, showing one of the maps that helped me on my way, although in reality these trails are so well travelled you're not exactly on an expedition in the summer months.

My hike in Sumava was to conclude with a side trip to Plesne Jezero, and this was one of the hiking maps that I found along the way.

There were also signs specifically for Plesne Jezero, this one being for the bike route.

This was the sign for the hiking route to Plesne Jezero, which I ended up taking after getting lost briefly.

When I got to Plesne Jezero, I was a little bit surprised to find snow, although the elevation there is considerable at 1089 meters, and it was, admittedly, May.

I decided to work on Picture 16 a bit in Gimp, and converted it to black and white to create this. In some ways, I like it better this way.

And....here it is. Plesne Jezero is actually a small lake way up in the mountains of Sumava, overlooked by Plechy, the mountain you see in the background (I think), which is 1378 meters above sea level.

The scene at Plesne Jezero impressed me so much, particularly with the clouds appearing as fog on the lake (the altitude was really that high), that I just shot and shot, and I didn't exclude much here. Notice the snow on Plechy.

Here the clouds were clearing somewhat, and so I shot this to see if I could get something different.

There is a benchmark dating to 1868 at Plesne Jezero, but I have to wonder what its purpose is since it has no altitude on it, only a date, which I doubt could be the date of the first expedition here. The hike would have been too easy even without trails for it to be unexplored as late as 1868.

The tree on the right looks like it's changing colors for the Fall, but in reality it's blooming for the Spring, as I took this in May.

Here's another leftover snow picture from Plesne Jezero. It wasn't actually cold or even cool out that day, but I would have to guess that so much snow built up during the winter that it wasn't all gone by May.
