My Mum was a good lacrosse player. I must ask her if they wore helmets in her day!

... well, despite the unstylishly shaggy locks, these are boys ... In Girls Lacrosse, only the goalie wears such a helmet (lots of other protective gear too.) ... although, in the U.S., because of the focus on preventing concussions, more and more girls are wearing some kind of protective headgear.
And in this shot, the boy on the right is a goalie, as indicated by the throat protector attached to the bottom of his faceguard.
