Walking the ridge.. 1 .. 'Mam tor' - to 'Lose hill'

Walking the ridge.. 1 .. 'Mam tor' - to 'Lose hill'
Here we are at the peak of 'Mam tor' at 517 m (1,696 ft) near Castleton in the High Peak of Derbyshire. Its name means Mother hill, so called because frequent landslips on its eastern face have resulted in a multitude of mini-hills beneath it. In 1979, the continual battle to maintain the A625 road ..Sheffield to Chapel en le Frith.. on the crumbling eastern side of the hill was lost when the road officially closed as a through-route. Traffic now has to use the narrow and beautiful 'Winnats pass' to travel west out of the 'Hope valley'.

Annemarie, Deborah Lundbech, Berny, Marco F. Delminho and 8 other people have particularly liked this photo

Very nice. I was intrigued by the name Mam tor. In Menorca, there is a mountain called Monte Toro, which is derived from the Arabic Al Tor, "The Hill." I wonder what could be the origin of the word tor.
