Steam Elephant passing a very old looking fence!

Steam Elephant passing a very old looking fence!
A very old locomotive from around 1815.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_Elephant

Look carefully, and you will see it is a geared 0-6-0 locomotive, as opposed to the later direct drive and coupling rods.

Wonderful view, Peter - it brings back happy memories of going to Beamish, both as a visitor and in connection with doing restoration work for the Museum. They have expanded so much that these days, you really need a couple of days to see everything. There's another big expansion of the "Town" being planned (covid permitting, that's something I'm looking forward to seeing)...

I find the Steam Elephant fascinating ... and back in 1990 (at Gateshead Garden Festival) I spent some time driving the Locomotion replica. So I'm wondering just how similar they would be to drive.
As for that lovely fence - the split rails were probably produced by riving branches with a froe. There's some useless information for you ...

Hi Sara,
Thank you so much for your very kind visit.
I am pleased you found it interesting. Certainly Beamish has so much to see!
As for differences in driving, maybe not so much, except that this is a geared locomotive, so possibly more akin to a traction engine..
Best Wishes, and keep safe!!
