Fensterartige Öffnungen gab es vermutlich schon, als die Menschen sesshaft wurden. Die frühesten Fensterformen waren in der Bronze- und Eisenzeit in Form abgekratzter und gestreckter Tierhäute zu finden. Während bei den Ägyptern Tierhäute und Alabaster als Verschlüsse der Fensteröffnungen verwendet wurden, experimentierten die Römer bereits mit Glas.
