La rose polynésienne, appelée couramment à Tahiti, Tiare Taina (Gardenia jasminoides) est la cousine du Tiare Tahiti (Gardenia tahitensis). Tous deux font partie de la famille des Rubiacées dans laquelle ont retrouve également le caféier. Le Gardenia jasminoides est originaire du japon et de Chine où il est connu comme plante médicinale sous le nom de Zhi Zi.
