I'm always amazed about how "open" your railways are compared to ours which are mostly off-limits to the public. Mind you, most of our rails are electified :-))

It is off-limits, but not usuallyfenced except in urban areas. These tracks and most others post No Trespassing and other warnings. If I had walked onto the tracks or beyond the concrete barrier, I would have been told to skeedaddle!

Ah, I didn't realise that. I've obviously been watching too many American movies!

If they're old movies, you would have seen the tracks were open everywhere. However, at the stations, there were the "bulls," the men hired by the RR to kick hobos off the train. Like bouncers in a bar. Now, there are cameras watching the tracks in populated areas.
