To be a redhead in the US is considered adorably unusual, at least in childhood. As teens, they usually take the worst of it. Adults are subjected to bad, but good-natured jokes. (Have a cousin with flaming...I mean FLAMING red hair until it turned white.) To be one in the UK seems like being thought of as the most unlucky person in the world, if not quite the Spawn of Satan. It might be the only thing that's over-the-top in Britain in comparison to American attitudes.

Not sure where you got the OTT version from.. but I can say with hand on heart its a totally wrong impression !!

Just like anywhere.. there will always be one or two OTT opinions.. but it certainly is the tiniest minority.. and will be found anywhere.

I've read it mentioned over the years. The one that stands out was by a BBC reporter years ago who was talking about Prince Harry "overcoming" the prejudice against gingers. A few nights ago I was watching something on Youtube...oh, it was about Mick something, the Simply Red singer. He talked about not being hired by a band many years ago because they didn't want a redhead and how much it bothered him. I can't remember the sources of other comments like that, but there have been more, and by Brits. I've just gotten the impression it's a bigger deal in the UK.

I suppose he did, I didn't see his face because he was walking ahead of me with his mother (out of the frame). Yes, they all seem to have freckles. So did I as a child (I used to be a brunette), but they have mostly faded away. Replaced by wrinkles!

Many decades ago when I met she who became wife for life I said the only aspect of her appearance which was lacking was that she didn't have red hair. I think the recent times' ridiculing of redheads is bizarre.

Except that now, it is a fad for young women to dye their hair red. Anything from fire engine red to deep burgundy. ;-) Did your wife dye her hair for you?
