I was in Berlin earlier in December and went to explore the Christmas markets for the first time. I tend to avoid public events in the U.S. where there's drinking due to the chance of rowdiness, but the markets in Berlin (and in other parts of Europe) were quite fun. Lots of people socializing, a very safe feeling, and nice to see so many people, and such diverse population groups, being happy together. I emailed with a friend in Berlin right after the attack and he said that the general attitude in Berlin seemed to be that they were not going to let this set them back.

I'm sure they won't. Europeans seem much less prone than we are to completely losing their minds over things like this. I understand that's changing with ultra-right rumblings, but I think they are still way more realistic than we are about life's troubles. I'm just relieved that 2016 is almost over...but, who knows what 2017 will bring.
