Water offering

Water offering
I do not know what this figure represents, but it looks like a dog holding a snail shell to me. It could be a fox, which is the Shinto guardian of rice and sake. Come to think of it, maybe that's sake in the glass! I should have sniffed it.

Update: Stormlizard suggested this might be a "tanuki." See his comment below.

Especially the glass of water looks very ominous to me! Is it for drink or is it a Bonsai aquarium?

I didn't drink any, I left it there for the dog. He looks thirsty.

It could also be "Tanuki" the Shinto God of Gluttons.

Coincidentally, a few days ago I was reading about the "raccoon dog" (tanuki) and had never heard of it before. That makes sense, as the figure does resemble it and the critter is definitely a glutton! Perhaps the "snail" is a sweet roll - haha! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_raccoon_dog
