The ancient Whitby Abbey

The ancient Whitby Abbey
Reminded by our Ipernity friend Rosalyn Hilborne and her excellent photos of Whitby and its Abbey, I revisited my old Panoramio photos of the same subject. Here is one taken in 2014 set in an atmospheric monochrome in an attempt to add the feeling of age and perhaps conjure up images relating to Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

The Abbey was a 7th-century Christian monastery that later became a Benedictine abbey. The abbey church was situated overlooking the North Sea on the East Cliff above Whitby in North Yorkshire.

Essential full screen

Hi Gordon, I was quite sure that you had some of this Abbey too but I could not find any here. Maybe like mine, in the old Panoramio or elsewhere perhaps. Anyway, great that you though it good enough for a star.

I think you've succeeded in setting the right atmosphere here Herb. The black and white along with the lovely light and the vignette have given this image a really supernatural feel.

I like the ruins of the abbey...........and the setting is just perfect for unearthly events!

Now that's pretty spectacular Herb! As I didn't actually go into the Abbey grounds, I didn't know there was a pond (?) there, which is highlighted so beautifully in this shot. I really can imagine Dracula getting ready to pounce on his victims!!

Thank you for sharing. I think I will have to make another trip up north, maybe for a bit longer next time.
All the best, Rosa.

Very happy that you managed to see this Rosa. As I said above, it was your shots of the Abbey that led me back to this. I do in fact have an even older one showing the pond too (it must have been an old fish pond for the nuns) that too has lots of atmosphere. Glad you liked Whitby which is a favourite of mine too. As you found out, the North East has a lot to offer and another trip, perhaps further north would be just as rewarding as you see from my trip to Northumbria.

Best Wishes, Herb

B&W works well to give an air of mystery I wonder why it was built in such an exposed position

Herb Riddle club has replied to Peter Castell club
Thanks Peter, yes it always looks almost haunting from certain angles. As you say, quite often Abbeys are built inside a very sheltered valley. Maybe they wanted the people around to know they were there. Glad you liked it.

This is a crackin' mono study, Herb. Love the threatening sky. Such a well-considered pov.. And, yes, essential to view at full screen.

Hi Herb
A very nice picture, which I like very much!
A very different post processing.
I think we all have been there, and taken pictures from more or less the same spot..
You have visited my attempt before... www.ipernity.com/doc/2247998/43600768/in/album/1063728
but the inclusion of the little pond works really well in the absence of anything special in the sky.
Of course a closer look may reveal some vampires.......!
Best Wishes, Happy Monday a nice week ahead, and stay safe!!

Thanks for this Peter and also a re-look at your very own Whitby Abbey too. An oldish photo here now and I felt lucky to have found the small fish pond. The mono was of course simply an attempt at producing a different feel to it all.

Cheers and stay safe. Herb

ps -our friend Toz has just revealed his stunning idea of the same Abbey too: www.ipernity.com/doc/2405228/51678238
