The Windmills of Mykonos

The Windmills of Mykonos
Looking a bit like a row of satellite dishes pointing to a distant star system, these windmills have been an iconic part of the Greek Island of Mykonos for a long time.

'The windmills can be seen from every point of the village of Mykonos, the island's principal village, which is frequently called the Chora. The windmills are the first thing seen when coming into the harbour of Alefkandra, as they stand on a hill overlooking the area. Most windmills face towards the North where the island's climate sources its strongest winds over the largest part of the year. There are currently 16 windmills on Mykonos of which seven are positioned on the landmark hill in Chora. Most of them were built by the Venetians in the 16th century, but their construction continued into the early 20th century. They were primarily used to mill wheat. They were an important source of income for the inhabitants. Their use gradually declined until they ceased production in the middle of the 20th century. The architecture of each of them is similar, all have a round shape, white colour and a pointed roof and very small windows. Such windmills are found in almost all Cyclades islands.' -WiKi

Looking at the PiPs, it must have been difficult to get the windmills in the frame without any tourists. :-)

Ah now you have it Amelia. Tourist numbers were the bane of this place. As you say, an almost impossible task to get the windmills without them. that is why, these close ups are both pointing upwards. To be fair, these were odd moments between the crowds and I could see that they were almost gone, from the deck of our ship as we were departing around 5pm. Oh to be there at sunrise/set without other sightseers, but who am Ito talk :) ~Herb

Great shots Herb. I love windmills but as you say they can be very difficult to photograph with people and other buildings getting in the way.

Thanks Maggs. Yes people were a bane here but as you can see I managed to get something anyhow.

I've visited the windmills of Mykonos many, many years ago (and I remember the thousands of tourists very well). They really look beautiful and somehow majestic on your photos, Herb.
Have a good Sunday!

Thanks a lot Antje. Yes I guess there has always been a lot of tourist to this small Island with these iconic windmills to photograph. With a few big cruise ships here (including ours) the numbers of tourist was almost overwhelming. However patience pays in the end.

Three cracking images Herb. This one is my favourite - you've managed to get a shot with no tourists in it yet still preserved the character and spirit of the windmills. I really like the detail and they looks superb in the sunshine.

I like both the PiPs especially the wider shot which puts the windmills in a wider context, and is beautifully composed - lots of tourists I know, but to be honest, you're showing it as it is - so I don't think they detract too much.

Thanks for another visit and comment Keith. Yes, this was my favourite too but the others painted the scene a but more complete. As you can see, a lot of people about but its my task to keep these out of frame. Glad you liked it. ~ Herb

delightful! so well photographed. hard to get this perspective done well. i've never been to Greece. perhaps someday.

i'd enjoy having this in my group 'm m multiples s s' - if you want.

do you greek music? rock music? my husband recently did translations of Greek poems to go with greek music style merged with rock - but very classic greek with greek instruments. the album came out last year. if you're interested, message me!

Nice to see you here again my friend. Greece especially its Islands can be so idyllic as you can see here. Somewhere I can recommend certainly. I normally make a video film of our travels accompanied by a photos-video with sound on Blue-Ray that we watch when not on holiday. The music we choose is normally folk music from that area. Knowing this I have acquired a sizable amount of traditional Greek music. My wife and I are not really Rock fans but many thanks for your kind offer.

Jose, I know what you mean -every day is grey and wet here in North West England. Just today was a rare dry day but as I speak the rains come back. - These beautiful waters and Islands bring me some warmth as I view my photos here and make me long to be back there.

Herb Riddle club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne club
Thanks Rosa, yes better than real dishes for sure. So happy that you enjoyed the three offerings here. in reality I have many more, as you can no doubt guess but there is such a thing as over-kill I know. The shot here with the tourist is almost the classic one but I would have to come again at daybreak to do it properly.

An absolute classic! The angle in your main photo is striking, you could easily imagine the windmills going on forever! I also like your PiPs showing more context, the crowds sadly are something we have to live with in such places,-)

Thanks so much Gudrun. As I get older, it seems I like the crowds less and less and so it was a disappointment to see so many people here. However, as you can see, I made the best of all that and you can almost imagine this place deserted through my captures. Very happy indeed that you enjoyed the series,
