Johnshaven harbour and village

Johnshaven harbour and village
A last look at this Scottish Eastern coastline (for now). The historic harbour village of Johnshaven is where we stayed for a week. Sleepy at this moment but it has many tales to tell.

'Johnshaven was one of the most successful fishing harbours in the early days of the 18C. In 1722 it was the fifth largest in Scotland with 26 boats sailing from there. From about 1743 it began to decline, firstly with 2 boats being lost and a few years later with crews being press ganged into the Navy. In 1753 sea-faring people and their families made up a third of the population of the parish, but by 1793 that number had fallen to less than a fifth.' ~ Johnshaven.com

Enjoy large.

There are a lot of harbours like this on he East Neuk of Fife. They always look busy, but I'm not sure they are.

Aye, Amelaia, we once had a week at St Monans and so remember too, the very similar harbours near there at Anstruther and Crail etc. They seemed to be more busy than Johnshaven and even Stonehaven but that was some years back now. We only saw one working boat here in the full week. Maybe they were all out fishing far North of here?

Delightful, Herb. I have long wanted to visit this Fife coast as photos of the villages and towns here make it look very attractive.
The closest I have been is looking down from the plane to Aberdeen and seeing the wonderfully indented coast further up, flying to Aberdeen twice a year in the early nineties to visit corporate clients who were (of course) in the oil business. I didn't even get to see Aberdeen as the company's offices were close to Bryce Airport.

Hi Andy, great to see you here again. Glad you liked this.
A great pity that you never got to really explore the coast both north and south of Aberdeen. These old harbour towns all have a story to tell, mainly about the old herring days. I was surprised at how varied the scenery was, with high clifftops, sandy dune-clad bays, castle, lighthouses and interesting towns too. Aberdeen was a nice surprise for us giving us a wonderful walk through the granite city. Unfortunately we never got to the very oldest part of the city but that was made up by seeing the harbour entrance and lighthouse. -You will have to try again my friend.

Herb not a place I ever went to but I can attest to the fact that its a rubber stamp too so many of these small fishing villages on the coast. It is a little surprising that its so dead at late afternoon, not one person. a joy large.

Good to see you Steve. The coast around here was very varied and interesting with Gourdon just to the north and the town of Montrose to our south. A great week was had by all!
Steve, we walked past the harbour here, each day and never saw more than a handful of people. Just one small fishing boat moving during the full week for us. As Daniela says below, there most be some more folk, as is so evident by the nets etc.

A beautiful, sadly empty little harbour...............there's a lot of lobster pots and other fishermen's detritus about, but seemingly no fishermen...........perhap's as you say, they're all out fishing!

This is very nicely composed in gorgeous warm light Herb............a charming photo!

Thanks Keith, a wonderful place indeed of which I can recommend a week of peace broken up only by the sea-breeze and gulls. As said above and in agreement with you here, there must be some fishing done from here -perhaps it was heaving at midnight-high-tide? Our cottage was about 300 yrds up the coast from here facing the sea some 25+ yards away. Glad you liked it.

I'm sure it's only a moment, because there are so many things there that shows that there has to be someone working.

Ah yes my friend. Indeed so many clues that indicate a thriving sea harbour but perhaps aliens have taken the fishermen away I am afraid! - Ah I remember now seeing one person with a fishing rod there. In fact the white building with the blue door was some commercial fishing venture too with working people inside. For you, some extra info posted above.

Many chances for photography in these places. LOve the curved border crossing the photogram, very nice sft light, many houses of the same style . Nice shot

Yes, I likes this curve too Mario. The lighting had began to soften as an early evening approached here this far north. The houses, all quite individual are typical of these Scottish harbour villages. Thanks for enjoying this with me.

Eva, it was indeed a wonderful week. Our second week, quite different but just as wonderful, if not more so, overlooking the Queens Castle at Balmoral with mountains instead of sea. We were lucky, both weeks with the weather. It has rained ever since up there :)
