Another busy day at Embsay
0-6-2T, No. 85 is visiting the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway from the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. Here we see it returning to its awaiting carriages after it has just reversed up this track and the switch having been set to the straight position.

No. 85 was built in 1899 by Neilson Reid for the Taff Vale Railway, which connected the Cardiff area with the coal mining industry located a few miles to the north. When the Taff Vale Railway was taken over by the GWR in 1922 the engine soon became surplus to requirements as the GWR had a policy of standardisation. In 1927 the engine was withdrawn and in 1929 the engine was sold to the Lambton, Hetton & Joicey Colliery Co. in County Durham to haul coal trains between the inland collieries and the coast.

When the coal industry was nationalised in 1947 it became NCB No. 52 and remained in service there until 1968 and following withdrawal arrived on the Worth Valley Railway in December 1970.

lt was re-built to its original outline by a group of Worth Valley volunteers in the 1990’s and gave good service until withdrawal in 2010. Seen as an ideal locomotive for the branch line, TVR No. 85 entered the workshops at Haworth and re-entered service at the 2016 Winter Steam Gala in its original fully lined out Taff Vale Railway livery.

... and, very definitely, PiP "Engine Detail" is a primary stand-alone shot !! ... so is "Ready For Off", the graytone is perfect and sets the mood; great "feel" ...

Hi Wally and many thanks for this. Great that you enjoyed this one and its Pips. I have re-looked at my Pips and under consideration have taken on-board your suggestion to have at least one of these Pips reverted to a real stand-alone photo. So, you may even want to leave additional comments on it too :~)

Yes Steve, if one tries, we have plenty of variety not too far from our doorsteps here. A station I have visited and photographed a few times. This time the place was only a few hundred metres from our cottage door. I had a few photos from here on Pano.

Ah George, you sound like me (and Steve above) where you are showing your years. One of the things about getting older is that we have seen a lot! I know Australia has a proud railway heritage too.

A smashing trio of shots from Embsay - all very good and well taken - but this one is especially well composed using the rails as leading lines (obvious really, I suppose)! The amount of fine detail you've captured is fantastic. A very evocative shot Herb.

Thanks Peter and apologies for late reply. I know what you mean about these pictures, one can only do so much strutting around one of these old heritage stations. I know that it is much more exciting getting a train and its wagons in full steam along a stretch of great scenery and with great light but... it all takes yet more effort and time, not always the easiest things when one travels everywhere with their wife :) Glad you enjoyed the series nevertheless Peter.
