The fabulous Pont de Normandie

The fabulous Pont de Normandie
Who could not be impressed by such a structure.

The Pont de Normandie was opened in 1995 and was then the world’s largest cable-stayed bridge. It spans the river Seine linking Le Havre to Honfleur in Normandy, northern France. Its total length is 2,143metres – 856 metres between the two piers. It has a clearance of 52 m and total height of 215 m.

A pleasure to see like this and a costly pleasure to drive over.

Jaap, I would feel bereft now if you stopped visiting my photos so fast. The bridge was a beautiful piece of engineering and fortunately the blue sky brought that out but I imagine this on a stormy Winters night may have looked very impressive too. It was a chance wrong turn that brought me so close here.

gorgeous! wonderful bridge and great photo of it. it's hard to show off the features of a bridge - well done!

we recently got a mini version of that type bridge. it's called the Tilikam Crossing bridge. it's a pedestrian and mass transit bridge. no charge to walk or bike across. here's my long distance photo of it (in the foreground): gray sky over portland

Thank you so much for this. Yes, I often see bridges that seem impossible to photograph, at least by me. I took a look at your mini version and at first thought that Portland on our South coast had undergone a big transformation! The penny dropped after a while. Looks very nice too and as you say, cheaper to cross. Your sky looks like our normal everyday skies :) Cheers, Herb

Hi Herb,

An impressive structure, and an impressive picture too. I like the way you have dominated the composition with the two upside down 'Y's. They convey a real sense of strength which would have been lost if you had shown the length of the bridge. Well thought out as ever!

Best Wishes

As everyone comments, it's certainly an impressive structure.
I wonder , does it require a lower gear to get to the top as the view suggests?

Thanks Peter and apologies for late reply. Yes, I am sure that I did have to change down a gear for this mighty bridge as it climbs somewhat from the river banks. Actually, just a mile or so further along the same stretch of road is yet another impressive bridge: The Grand Canal Bridge at Le Havre -
structurae.net/structures/grand-canal-bridge-at-le-havre and that one I definitely had to change down a gear or even two. Unfortunately I never got to photograph that one at close range. Glad you enjoyed this. Herb
