One of the most striking rooms in the palace is the Gallery of Mirrors, resplendent in the light reflected by its many mirrors and the beauty of its stuccoes and paintings by Le Brun. The great Gallery expresses in its wealth the political, economic and artistic success of France. It was used daily as a place of passage, waiting and meeting and was frequented by courtiers and visitors. Despite its splendour, the Mirror Gallery was only exceptionally the backdrop for ceremonies, when diplomatic receptions or royal wedding parties were to be lavished with the greatest pomp. On such occasions, the throne was placed on a podium at the end of the gallery. It was here, moreover, that the Treaty of Versailles ending World War I was signed on 28 June 1919, and the Presidents of the French Republic have continued to receive France's official guests here ever since.
