L’attrazione principale di Mont Saint-Michel è senza dubbio la magnifica Abbazia che si erge sulla sommità del monte, un pregevole esempio di architettura medievale. Fondata nell'VIII secolo, dal vescovo d'Avranches, Aubert, ache vrebbe fondato un santuario nel 708 sul Mont-Tombe, dopo 3 apparizioni successive dell'arcangelo San Michele (Saint-Michel). Consacrata nel 709, la chiesa non ha cessato da allora di attirare curiosi e pellegrini da ogni parte del mondo.
L’abbazia benedettina è stata modificata ed ampliata nel corso dei secoli a seguito di incendi, crolli, ricostruzioni, scelte architettoniche e cambiamenti funzionali. Da non perdere il chiostro, autentica oasi di silenzio e pace sospesa fra cielo e mare, e l'annessa abitazione dei monaci, eccezionale esempio di gotico normanno. Il sagrato è il luogo ideale per godere di una magnifica vista sulla baia, soprattutto nel momento delle grandi maree. Durante l’anno l'abbazia ospita interessanti proposte culturali e concerti di musica classica.
Sommo luogo di pellegrinaggio dall'VIII al XVIII secolo, l'abbazia benedettina di Mont-Saint-Michel rappresenta uno degli esempi più notevoli dell'architettura al contempo religiosa e militare dell'epoca medievale. Founded in the 8th century by the Bishop of Avranches, Aubert, who supposedly founded a sanctuary in 708 on Mont-Tombe, after three successive apparitions of the Archangel Saint Michael (Saint-Michel). The Benedictine abbey has been modified and enlarged over the centuries following fires, collapses, reconstructions, architectural choices and functional changes.
