Box turtle - Terrapene carolina

Box turtle - Terrapene carolina
My dogs catch these turtles. I take the turtles from them and try to distract the dogs. This individual has particularly bright colors.

Jocelyne Villoing, micritter, Marie-claire Gallet, Andy Rodker have particularly liked this photo

I presume you have given us the latin name and haven't just decided to call it Carolina!
:o)
Fine shot!

That is the Latin name, but maybe I will start calling the females Carolina and the males Carl. Apparently the sexes can be distinguished by their eye color - if you can get them to stick out their necks.

I do scold the dogs when I take the turtles from them. They are very good at finding interesting things in the forest.

Wow, what a great one. I have never seen a box turtle here (only inside the nature center), even though I know they exist in Michigan.

Thanks, Dörthe. They're terrestrial, so they're the turtles most likely to be brought home by the dogs. The patterns on their backs are so varied.
