Ring-necked snake (Diadophis punctatus)

Ring-necked snake (Diadophis punctatus)
A very small snake found throughout most of the United States. It is about the size of a pencil. I found this one when I picked up a water tub to empty it.

micritter, marianek, Marie-claire Gallet and 2 other people have particularly liked this photo

I guess they really are poisonous, but they are so tiny that they are a danger only to small insects and worms.

Thanks, Dörthe. I think these are really elegant-looking snakes with their yellow or red necklaces.

Excellent capture. But the crucial question is what Andy asked :)

Thanks, micritter. It is a very tiny snake that is a danger only to very tiny prey. There are some water moccasins and rattlesnakes in Mississippi, but I've never seen them near my house.
