Aerial roots

Aerial roots
Today's Saturday challenge is: "Zimmerpflanze / Houseplant"

Aerial roots are roots above the ground. They are almost always adventitious. They are found in diverse plant species, including epiphytes such as orchids. In the wild these adventitious roots absorb rainwater for moisture and use nutrients from decaying insects or leaves for fertilizer.

I have had this orchid for nine years and pay it scant attention except when it is flower. It flowered from November last year to March of this year and seems to thrive on neglect. It only seems to flower every two years.

Erhard Bernstein, micritter, Balatre, Cämmerer zu Nau and 20 other people have particularly liked this photo

As I said - neglect. I have never fed it. and only water it very sparingly with small amounts of bottled water once a month at most. It is in our music room, and may thrive while Adrian is playing his guitar. ;-)

You found one, and with interesting shapes, good!
I have given up on orchids, I tried various times and always managed to kill them off.

They are very popular house plants in Norway, and the owner of our flat, Oddbjørg, used to provide me with a new one every 6 months as I didn't seem able to keep them. This one is in our music room and I forget about it most of the time. They thrive on neglect. ;-)

If it thrives on neglect, that's the kind I need here! :-)
