Barmouth Viaduct

Barmouth Viaduct
Grade II* listed Barmouth Viaduct crosses the estuary of the River Mawddach, south of the town, carrying a single track of the Cambrian Coast Railway. Its swing span over the navigation channel no longer opens but the viaduct remains in continual use. A walkway on one side allows pedestrian and cycle access. The Cambrian line, around the northern end of Cardigan Bay, connects Aberystwyth, Tywyn, Barmouth, Harlech, Porthmadog, Criccieth and Pwllheli.

Originally pedestrians and cyclists were charged a toll to cross the viaduct but the small charges became uneconomic to collect and were abolished in June 2013.

I love this place though I have last been there in my student days! I never managed the walkway, just a bit of the panorama walk over the estuary. You had a great day out!

Just the sort of day to be at the coast, Gudrun, and well worth the 1+3/4 hours it took to get there. I also pottered around here in my college years, doing field studies at Aberystwth Uni, then taking groups of students to Arthog when I was teaching.

Nicely taken and it's good to see that the line remains in use.

Thank you, George. It's in need of a jolly good coat of paint I think. It would be nice to tyake a train journey around this part of the coast.

It's nowhere near in such good condition as the Boston Sluice bridge, Steve. In fact I'm surprised that it is still used by the railways. It's a p[pity that the swing span no longer works. That would have been exciting to see.

Cheers, Amelia
