Released in 1951, Hank Williams composed "Cold, Cold Heart" as the B side of "Dear John" which was a top ten hit. Radio people flipped it over and "Cold, Cold Heart" topped the Country chart. The melody is from T. Texas Tyler's "You'll Still Be In My Heart" (West) issued in the forties.
Tony Bennett, similiar to others under Mitch Miller's control, did not want to record this song because it was already a country success. Mitch advised Tony to record it or Mitch would break his contract with Columbia. Tony Recorded "Cold, Cold Heart" and it became a number one hit. Backed by Percy Faith's Orchestra it stayed on the charts for more than half the year.
