The chequered history of Bridgwater Docks is waiting for the next instalment, Built between 1837–1841 they are connected to the Bridgwater and Taunton canal at the western end and to the River Parret and the sea beyond at the eastern end,
Shipping reached a peak between 1880 and 1885; with an average of 3,600 ships per year entering the port. Bridgwater also built some 167 ships; the last one was the Irene, launched in 1907 and is still in use today.
It was able to accommodate ships up to 600 tons and by the mid-1950s,the total Port of Bridgwater was importing some 80,050 to 106,800 tonnes of cargo with Bridgwater bricks and tiles being exported,
In the 1980 the docks were converted into a marina
The docks are owned by Somerset County Council and were leased to the Canal & River Trust who deided not to renew the lease so all boats were evicted. Efforts to bring this valuable asset back into use is being led by the town Council,
