The wall on the right forms a part of the entrance to POW 44 camp Goathurst, Bridgwater, Italian pows were at Goathurst where they lived in new huts and were reasonably well looked after with about 500 men in each camp. In return for their good care, they were employed, mostly in agricultural work and could be seen walking freely around the town with their yellow patches on their backs. The camp later housed German pows, And as a child i well remember them visiting our village at North Petherton many were welcomed into houses for tea and cake, often swapping stories with my father, in return they brought ships in bottles and a small wooden car for me, We had two or three regular visitors sadly I have forgotten names, In 16.9 format so a large view perhaps, HWW!
