No Name & Blue

This is the Forth and Clyde Canal. In 1963 the canal was closed rather than construct a motorway crossing, and so it became disused and semi-derelict. Canal locks in the Falkirk area on the Union Canal near the connection to the Forth and Clyde canal had been filled in and built over in the 1930s. As part of the millennium celebrations in 2000, National Lottery funds were used to regenerate both canals. A boatlifting device, the Falkirk Wheel, was built to connect the two canals and once more allow boats to travel from the Clyde or Glasgow to Edinburgh, with a new canal connection to the River Carron and hence the River Forth. The Falkirk Wheel opened on 27 May 2002 and is now a tourist attraction. HBM and a good week to all, ,,,,,, in 16.9 format therefore a large view may be better!

An orange canal boat full of passengers floating in a caisson is lifted 115 feet (ca. 35 m) before docking into the high level section of the Union Canal, For an idea of size see people outside the glass fronted visitor center. This is the Falkirk Wheel, a unique rotating boat lift which was built as a Millennium project and links the Union Canal with the Forth and Clyde Canal, Pips show progress through the lift,......... Large view recommended! A brief history for anyone interested. www.canaljunction.com/attraction/falkirk-wheel.htm

Canal in the sky !

An image shot in 16.9 so a large view would be appreciated. An alternative view of the Falkirk rotating boat lift, opened in 2002 and replacing a flight of 11 locks that once stepped the Union Canal down to the level of the Forth & Clyde, more than 100 feet below. That saved manually opening and closing 44 lock gates a short trip that took almost a day can now be done in just a few minutes. Boats are lifted 35 meters to the Union canal shown in this image. The futuristic wooden building on the right is visitor centre Wish you a nice Friday and a good weekend.

The Forth and Clyde,

Lock Gates on the Forth and Clyde Canal at The Helix, Falkirk. The canal is 35 miles (56 km) long, and it runs from the River Carron at Grangemouth to the River Clyde at Bowling, This allowed navigation from Edinburgh on the east coast to the port of Glasgow on the west coast. Better viewed large I think ! Wish everyone a nice Friday and a peaceful weekend

This is my take on the park which covers over 350 hectares and opened to the public in 2013 with the Kelpies (Horses) following in 2014, Standing at 30 metres tall, and weighing over 300 tonnes each, The Kelpies are the world’s largest equine sculptures, The waterway on the left is the Forth and Clyde canal which also featured in previous images from the Falkirk Wheel, This is a link to one of the series Happy Crew. Large for full details please and a wonderful Friday and a terrific weekend to all.

Falkirk Wheel (4 pips)

15 Jun 2023 82 129 1308
The boat in the main images has just been raised 24 metres (79 ft), on the Falkirk Wheel boat lift, A series of three pips show progress as One boat is lowered and One raised, in all three images the waterproof plate that keeps the tray full of water can be seen, Once the wheel has reached the top and has been locked in place the plate is lowered and water levels equalised, The fourth pip is a previously posted image with a longer view of the boat lift, Full information and facts of the wheel here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falkirk_Wheel Strongly recommend a large view, Finally, a musical link, www.youtube.com/watch?v=kK62tfoCmuQ

The 180-Metre Roughcastle Tunnel was built as part of the Millennium Link project to carry the Edinburgh and Glasgow Union Canal beneath the World Heritage Site Antonine Wall which crosses the canal link. This was the first UK canal to be built for a 100 years and was built to replace the flight of locks that once joined the Union and Forth & Clyde Canals, Large perhaps, Wish you all a nice Friday and a good weekend
