From way back!

12 Feb 2026 38 66 326
A shot from the Scottish Borders, discovered in the archives. Originally called Coldingham Shore, the village adopted the name St Abbs in the 1890s, inspired by nearby St Abb's Head—a rocky promontory named after the 7th-century saint Æbbe (or Ebba), who founded a monastery there around 635 AD.Today, St Abbs remains a working fishing community but thrives on tourism. It's especially popular for:Coastal walks — The St Abb's Head National Nature Reserve (managed by the National Trust for Scotland) offers breathtaking cliff-top trails with seabird colonies (like puffins, guillemots, and kittiwakes in season), wild scenery, and a lighthouse. This was taken from the Slipway of the St Abbs Independent Lifeboat A lifeboat service has been present in St Abbs since 1911, established after the tragic wreck of the Danish steamer Alfred Erlandsen in 1907, where all 17 crew members were lost due to delays in rescue efforts from nearby stations. Originally operated by the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution), the station was closed by them on September 8, 2015, after 104 years, despite local campaigns to keep it open. The community responded strongly, and with significant support—including a major donation from local company Tunnock's (the famous Scottish biscuit makers)—the service was relaunched as an independent operation. The current inshore lifeboat is named Thomas Tunnock in honor of that support, and it's noted as one of the fastest in the UK, capable of speeds up to 40 knots. Eyemouth, Scottish Borders, the water on the left runs onto the beach and the trappings that go with it, on the right is the entrance to the harbour which featured with the lifeboat on a sandbar in a previous image, Markings on the side of the cut give an idea of the tidal range on this stretch of North Sea coast, however for me the sky is the most impressive part of the image. On a Shout (pips)

The Eyemouth Trent Class all weather lifeboat "RNLB Barclaycard Crusader" off to a shout on an extremely low tide in fact there was not enough water under the boat for it to clear the harbour entrance without many minutes shunting and disturbing sand from under the keel (pip 1) before finally forcing itself free and into open water (pip 2)
