A Scolops sulcipes

15 Jul 2014 248
Was getting dark and it was small and focus is imperfect; I post it only because I'd never seen such a thing before. It flies. And flew. This was the only shot I got. It turns out that it's a Scolops sulcipes , which identification was made possible through the assistance of Jerome Constant, via the great macrophotographer Kurt . A Scolops is a Dictyopharid hopper. Kurt's tremendous macrophotography website is orionmystery.blogspot.com , and I highly recommend it -- truly magnificent work there, and creatures you're not likely to encounter.

Another little beetle, this at the top of a small thistle-like flower head.

Yup, it's a wasp

I'm not sure that this is the same as the flying things the last two days, but this flying thing, tiny and sadly not in focus, has the antennae of a wasp.

Spiny spider

Web exuding from its spinneret. This spider makes a whole new net each night and, I believe, consumes it in the morning.
