Many trunks make for nice shade

24 Jun 2013 245
All these trunks are of the same tree. A pleasant place to be on a hot summer's day.

One tree, many trunks

Something happened long ago to this tree, such that its main trunk is gone. The runners on the sides have since then done it proud, though.

Street textures

Nothing is either horizontal or vertical. Storm is coming, but all is peaceful for now.

A bog-standard IR picture

This is what it looks like with white-balance corrected but no channel switching or anything like that. Maybe what it will look like there when we colonize and terraform Mars!

Common in nature

14 Nov 2012 242
Cold but bright morning, sun on the other side of the trees. What drew me to this stark image is how common it is in all kinds of natural phenomena: satellite pictures of river systems are of this pattern. Our own circulatory system has many of the same aspects, as do mountain ranges, the support structures in leaves, and so on. I think it's cool. Also pretty.

I loved the texture of this. Taken in the woods in southeastern Ohio. And yes, this is a color picture!

Snow Sculpture

One of the hardest things to do is to capture the subtle details in drifted snow, especially with a fairly small negative. This is as close as I ever came. Mamiya 645, normal lens, Tri-X, Microdol-X 1:3

Grizzled Old Tree

I liked the tones in this piece of tree, taken somewhere in New York. Mamiya 645, normal lens, Tri-X, Microdol-X 1:3

Knot

Playing with tones is fun, and trees provide a great opportunity to do it, especially in black-and-white. Mamiya 645, normal lens, Tri-X, Microdol-X 1:3

Harrison, New York. I've always loved this picture because it looks more like a charcoal sketch. It's unmanipulated in any way, though -- not even cropped. Olympus OM-1, 35mm Zuiko, Tri-X, D-76 1:1, Rollei strobe
